Italy Finds ChatGPT In Violation Of European Privacy Act
TechCrunch is reporting that an investigation by the Italian data protection authority has found OpenAI’s conversational bot ChatGPT to be in violation of the European Privacy Act. Details of the investigation’s findings are not yet available, but under the European Union’s system, proven violations of the pan-European system can result in fines of up to 20 million euros, or 4 percent of annual global turnover. OpenAI has been notified by Italy, and has 30 days to defend itself.
Meta Releases Code Llama 70B Update
On January 30th, Meta announced the open-sourcing of a new version of Code Llama that includes a 70B parametric model in Llama 3 and future models.Code Llama 70B is claimed to have an accuracy of 53% on the HumanEval benchmark, better than the 48.1% of the GPT-3.5, and close to the 67% mark of the OpenAI paper (PDF) GPT-4. Code Llama, built on Llama 2 and initially released in August 2023, is primarily designed to assist developers with code writing, but Meta also has programming language-specific Code Llama tools, including Code Llama – Python and Code Llama – Instruct.
Neuralink Human Implant Surgery Goes Well
Elon Musk said in a Jan. 30 news release that his neurotechnology startup Neuralink had completed its first implantation for human participants on Sunday, local time, and that the participants were recovering well from the procedure. Neuralink had previously said it wanted to use brain-machine implants to help people with severe paralysis to use neural signals to control external devices, and the study was approved by the FDA in May 2023 and began recruiting patients for human clinical trials in the fall of the same year. The study was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2023, and patients began being recruited for human clinical trials in the fall of the same year; the human clinical trials are just the first step toward commercialization of Neuralink, whose first device is called Telepathy, Musk said.
